IAM Market has just welcomed two of the world’s biggest high-tech players to its patent and technology transactions portal.
The latest rights holders to join the platform are Microsoft and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, bringing the total number of IAM Market vendors to 22. Both are major patent owners, with significant global portfolios and extensive experience in monetising IP assets.
IT and software giant Microsoft needs little introduction, as one of the most widely recognised brands worldwide – and one of the most active licensors of patents. According to research from investment bank MDB Capital Group and IAM, the company held the fourth-largest portfolio of in-force US patent assets as of the end of 2015. This included 31,692 issued US patents – placing it behind third-placed IBM (39,436 grants) and ahead of Sony (29,988). In addition, Microsoft held 8,050 pending US patent applications, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in applications of 8%. The US company’s patent portfolio also rated highly in terms of technological relevance (MDB calculates a ‘Tech Score’ from the rate at which the utility patents in a portfolio are being cited and normalised against a cohort group of patents selected by age).
Fraunhofer IIS is the largest of 69 institutes and research units under the umbrella of Germany’s Fraunhofer Society, which is one of the world’s foremost R&D organisations. Almost one-fifth of its budget comes from the German federal and state governments, with the rest coming from externally commissioned research projects. Focusing on innovation in the microelectronics and IT fields, Fraunhofer IIS played a pioneering role in the invention of MP3 and advanced audio coding technologies.
MDB’s research indicates that the Fraunhofer Society held the 251st largest portfolio of in-force US patents at the end of 2015, with 1,582 grants, 643 pending applications and a 10% CAGR. Like Microsoft, it has also been active in using its IP to facilitate collaborations and generate revenue streams; in the past it has partnered with Intellectual Ventures on R&D programmes, and is a participant in some of world’s leading patent pools.
Fraunhofer IIS has already listed its first package for sale or licensing on IAM Market, comprising three German patents relating to magnetic resonance and x-ray imaging technology. You can view the package here.
